OVERVIEW

About
the business

HealthHub is a premier healthcare provider with a vast network of retail pharmacies, clinics, and wellness centers across North America and Europe.

The company is dedicated to offering accessible, affordable, and high-quality healthcare services. Their mission is to transform healthcare delivery through innovation and technology, ensuring that millions of customers receive the best possible care.

HealthHub already had a solution that was actively used by numerous clinics. That solution was a multifunctional e-prescribing system. It was built long ago using outdated tech stack and with time it became less effective and user-friendly.

Our client wanted to perform a modernization of the e-prescribing system and integrate several new features. HealthHub contacted us and requested a system audit and further redesign. That’s how our cooperation began.

OVERVIEW

Project tasks
and challenges

The existing e-prescribing system, a critical component of the HealthHub operations, was built using outdated technologies. This system was no longer able to meet the evolving needs of their business and patients.

The client approached us and requested a comprehensive audit of the e-prescribing system. Their goal was to modernize it to align with current industry standards, improve efficiency, and enhance patient care.

Here are the challenges our client faced:

  • Legacy Infrastructure: The existing e-prescribing system was built on an outdated platform that was no longer scalable or capable of supporting modern features and functionalities.
  • Interoperability Issues: The system had limited integration capabilities with other healthcare systems, leading to inefficiencies in data exchange and patient care coordination.
  • User Experience: The old system had a cumbersome user interface, which led to slow adoption by healthcare providers and increased the risk of prescription errors.
  • Performance and Scalability: The system struggled with performance issues during peak usage times, and there was a need to ensure it could scale to meet future growth.
  • Customization and Flexibility: The outdated system lacked the flexibility to adapt to the diverse needs of different clinics and pharmacies within the HealthHub network.

The project was complex and required a deep understanding of the existing infrastructure and a strategic approach to integrating new technologies without disrupting ongoing operations.

OVERVIEW

Tech Stack

Taking into account that the e-prescribing system was built using outdated technologies, we needed to perform a shift to newer tech stack. Here is the list of technologies that we worked with:

Legacy technologies include:

- Java and Spring Framework for backend services.
- MS SQL Server for database management.
- SOAP Web Services for integration with other healthcare systems.

Modern technologies that we selected and used:
- React.js for a dynamic and responsive frontend.
- Node.js with Express.js for additional backend services.
- RESTful APIs to modernize the integration approach.
- AWS for seamless cloud hosting and storage.
- Docker and Kubernetes for containerization and orchestration.
- OAuth 2.0 and JWT for secure authentication and authorization.

PROJECT JOURNEY

Platform Features

84-icon

Patient Registration & Admission

The system offers easy patient onboarding with quick registration. All necessary medical data and history can be added and managed in the patient profile.

84-icon-2

Electronic Medical Records (EMR)

We created a centralized repository for patient medical history. It has integration with lab results and diagnostic imaging and offers secure, role-based access for authorized clinitians.

Drug and Prescription History

Healthcare providers can quickly access a 12-month history of patient medications, streamline the medication reconciliation process and ensure that everything is considered before prescribing certain drugs.

84-icon-4

Medication Adherence Monitoring

The system offers tools that help healthcare providers monitor and support patient adherence to prescribed drugs. It includes financial assistance resources to address common challenges in patient adherence.

Pharmacy Management

This feature helps to perform easy inventory control and medication dispensing. Due to integration with EMR doctors can ensure medication history accuracy and perform prescription management with refill tracking.

Prescription and Refill Requests

FEATURE OVERVIEW

Prescription and refill requests

The healthcare provider can create a new prescription during a patient consultation right in the e-prescription system. The prescription can include the medication name, dosage, frequency, duration and instructions for the patient.

Once the prescription is finalized, it's sent to the patient’s preferred pharmacy in real-time, ensuring accuracy and reducing the chances of errors.

The patient receives an automatic notification that their prescription has been sent to the pharmacy. They can also view the prescription details and instructions in the patient portal.

When a patient is running low on medication, they can log into the patient portal and request a refill of an existing prescription in a few clicks. The system flags the refill request to the healthcare provider for approval. The physician can review the patient’s medical history and previous prescription details before approving or modifying the refill request.

The system can send reminders to both patients and providers about upcoming refill needs, helping to ensure continuous medication adherence.

Clinical Decision Support

FEATURE OVERVIEW

Clinical Decision Support

As a healthcare provider enters a prescription into the system, the clinical decision support feature analyzes the patient’s current list of medications.

If the system detects a potential drug-drug interaction that could harm the patient, it immediately generates an alert and notifies the healthcare provider with a clear warning message.

The system also suggests safer alternative medications or adjustments to the dosing regimen to avoid the interaction.

When a provider selects a medication, the clinical decision support provides recommended dosing ranges based on factors such as the patient’s age, weight, renal function, and other clinical parameters. If the prescribed dose falls outside the recommended safe range, the system generates an alert, notifying the provider of the potential dosing error.

The system can also provide evidence-based guidelines and recommendations during the prescribing process. For example, if a particular condition is being treated, the CDS can suggest the most appropriate medication based on the latest clinical research.
