The situation

DTEK is an energy distribution company in Ukraine. Its goal was to simplify the management and payment of electricity bills and replace paper-based reporting, which cost operations time and money and pushed customers to the support center for every question.

The portal had to serve private and business customers, be understandable even for older and less technical people, hold up under very heavy daily use with strict security and fault tolerance, and work with the company's SAP systems.

What we did

We interviewed different kinds of customers and ran an on-site workshop with the DTEK team. Customers wanted to see payment history and past meter readings, get clear bills they can pay remotely, keep track of debt, fees and planned outages, and avoid phone calls when something goes wrong.

The portal lets customers report meter readings, review usage over months and years, receive efficiency tips and sign up for consultations, analyze and pay bills online and see their history, send billing queries through digital channels, log service requests at any time and follow their status, and manage supply contracts when they move. We designed the architecture so that data moves between the front end and back end and the SAP server without overloading it at peak load, with load spread across the components, caching where needed and secure storage of user data.

For the design we built a system for different age groups, testing fonts, sizes, contrast levels and color schemes and choosing a large primary font size so that content is readable for older users.

The result

Private and business customers can follow their consumption and receive and pay their bills online, and fewer of them need the support center.

Product development

We conducted a series of interviews with different representatives of the target audience and an on-site workshop with the DTEK team to understand their customers’ business objectives.

We summarized the results as requirements for the future platform development:

  • Payments history, review the previous meter readings to see the dynamic of the energy consumption throughout a year
  • Receive uncluttered, easy-to-navigate bills with all the relevant information on them and the ability to pay them remotely
  • Easily keeping up with current debt, relevant fees, charges, and planned power outages
  • As a result – to create positive customer interactions and simplify communication and information sharing. Avoiding talking on the phone in case of a power outage or any other issue
